AI-Ready Documentation Kit

A repository-based system for project context, prompts, decisions, task planning, and progress records that makes work easier to continue and review.

Context

A project can lose momentum when its important context is spread across chats, individual notes, tickets, and undocumented decisions. I have been developing a practical documentation structure for software and product work that needs both human clarity and useful AI-assisted execution.

Problem

AI tools can accelerate work, but they cannot safely infer the product direction, constraints, evidence boundaries, or definition of done. The problem was to give a project enough durable context and workflow structure that planning, execution, review, and handoff stay grounded in the real system.

Constraints

The kit is deliberately lightweight and repository-based: no claims of autonomous delivery, no client secrets in prompts, and no assumption that AI output is correct without review. It must remain usable by a person without locking a project into a particular AI vendor.

My role

Systems builder defining the documentation model, prompt responsibilities, decision-record format, task workflow, and review gates used to keep project work inspectable.

Approach

I organized the workflow around durable project artifacts: a brief for direction, architecture and decision notes for constraints, focused prompts for each work mode, task plans for scoped execution, and progress records that preserve what changed and how it was verified.

Architecture and workflow

The system is a structured repository layer rather than an external knowledge silo. Project brief and strategy documents provide direction; ordered prompt files guide planning, execution, review, and progress updates; issue or task records hold scoped work; and decision and changelog documents retain the rationale and history.

Result or current status

The system provides a repeatable way to turn scattered project knowledge into a reviewable working context. It is used to make next steps, constraints, and completion evidence clearer before AI assistance or implementation expands the scope.

What this work demonstrates

A practical view of AI readiness: organize the underlying project first, use automation to support judgment, and leave a clear trail that another person can inspect or continue.

What I would improve next

The next useful step is a reusable public starter kit with example project files, a lightweight onboarding guide, and a clearly bounded template for teams that want to adapt the approach.
